Principal Technical Artist  

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Technical Artist to join our Dundee studio. We are looking for someone who has a strong knowledge of art and animation pipelines. They need to be enthusiastic and have a passion for problem solving, technical challenges and exploring new techniques. 
  
At 4J Studios we value creativity, collaboration, and quality, and we are searching for like-minded individuals to work on our exciting new projects built on our new engine.    

You will work closely with the Art and Software departments to bring our products to life with creative solutions to lighting, material design, post processing, VFX design and PBR pipelines in both Unreal Engine 5 and our own in-house Engine.   
  
You should have excellent communication skills and have a portfolio that demonstrates your skillset, creativity, and processes.  
 
You will be able to create and establish art techniques and pipelines for the team to follow as well as producing scripts and tools alongside the software team to make production more efficient.  
 
You will have a good knowledge of post-processing effects and be capable of setting up material pipelines.   
 
You will have the ability to foster a positive productive culture of learning as well as refining your own skill set to exceed at your craft. 

  • A strong knowledge of 3D Software, Substance Designer, and Unreal Engine 5.  
  • A portfolio that demonstrates creativity, technical, and artistic skills.  
  • Excellent problem-solving skills in Animation, VFX and game engine optimisation. 
  • Extensive knowledge of 3D pipelines within games. 
  • Extensive knowledge with scripting languages such as Python or Mel Script. 
  • A strong understanding of shaders and lighting. 
  • Custom shader creation experience using a high-level language such as HLSL or GLSL, or Unreal Material Editor  
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and tutoring skills. 
  • Able to communicate positively, collaborate, and coordinate with other members of the team. 
  • Experience in a Principal or Senior role on shipped PC or Console titles within a Technical Art team. 
  • Knowledge of character rigging would be advantageous. 
  • Knowledge of procedural material techniques. 
  • Knowledge of VFX creation using industry tools.  
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
